Resumen

El mosquito Aedes aegypti no es originario de América. Su llegada al continente está ligada a procesos históricos como la colonización del continente americano, el comercio transatlántico y los movimientos humanos a gran escala. Este artículo recorre la ruta histórica de este mosquito, desde su origen en las islas del océano Índico, hasta su establecimiento en América, explicando cómo se adaptó a los entornos urbanos y se convirtió en un eficiente transmisor de virus como el dengue, zika y chikungunya. Comprender su historia permite entender los retos actuales para su control y prevención.

Abstract

The Aedes aegypti mosquito is not native to the Americas. Its arrival to the continent is tightly liked to historical processes such as the European colonization of the continent, transatlantic trade, and large-scale human migrations. In this article we review the history of this mosquito, from its origin in the Southwest Indian Ocean to its establishment in the Americas, its adaptation to urban environments, and how it became an efficient vector of viral diseases such as dengue, Zika, and chikungunya. Understanding Ae. aegypti ’s evolutionary history helps to design strategies aimed to prevent and control diseases transmitted by this mosquito.
